What is JEE Main Exam?

JEE Main or JEE Main is the first phase of the IIT Joint Entrance Exam (IIT JEE). It is a computer-based online test conducted by the National Testing Agency for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate courses in India in top engineering institutes, such as IITs, NITs, etc. Thus, students are granted admission to IITs, CFTIs, NITs, and other Government funded technical institutes based on the marks obtained in the JEE Main. The exam conducting authority considers the best NTA score in preparing the ranks/merit list. Candidates could further opt to appear for one exam or all the exams. Also, the top 2,50,000 students from the JEE Main will qualify to appear for the JEE Advanced

What is JEE Advance ?

Advanced (JEE Advanced) is an annual Indian entrance examination for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other premier engineering and science institutions in India. The exam is considered one of the most challenging undergraduate admissions exams in the world, and only the top 2.5 lakh rank holders in the JEE Main exam are eligible to appear for it.

The Indian Institutes of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT JEE), commonly referred to as the JEE, is one of the most prestigious and competitive engineering entrance exams in India. It is conducted annually to facilitate admissions into various undergraduate engineering programs offered by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other centrally funded technical institutions across the country.

Here are some key aspects and features of the IIT JEE exam:

  1. Examination Levels: The IIT JEE exam consists of two stages:
    • JEE Main: Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), JEE Main is the first stage of the examination. It serves as a qualifying test for admission to undergraduate engineering programs at NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions. JEE Main is also the gateway to the JEE Advanced exam.
    • JEE Advanced: Only those candidates who qualify JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced is conducted by one of the IITs on a rotational basis and serves as the final stage for admission to undergraduate engineering programs at the IITs.
  2. Exam Format: Both JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams assess candidates’ proficiency in three core subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The exams are conducted in a computer-based test (CBT) format and comprise multiple-choice questions (MCQs) as well as numerical value-based questions.
  3. Syllabus: The syllabus for the IIT JEE exam is extensive and covers topics from the Class 11 and Class 12 curricula of various Indian education boards, including CBSE, ICSE, and state boards. The syllabus is divided into three sections corresponding to Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, with a strong emphasis on conceptual understanding and problem-solving abilities.
  4. Difficulty Level: The IIT JEE exam is renowned for its challenging nature and high level of difficulty. The questions are designed to test candidates’ analytical skills, critical thinking abilities, and problem-solving aptitude. As a result, rigorous preparation and consistent practice are essential for success in the exam.
  5. Competition: Given the limited number of seats available in the prestigious IITs and other premier engineering institutions, the competition for the IIT JEE exam is intense. Lakhs of aspirants across the country vie for a chance to secure admission to these institutions, making the exam highly competitive and demanding.
  6. Admission Process: Admission to undergraduate engineering programs at the IITs and other participating institutions is based on the candidates’ performance in the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams. Additionally, candidates must satisfy eligibility criteria related to age, educational qualifications, and category reservations as per the norms specified by the respective conducting authorities.
  7. Preparation Resources: A wide range of preparation resources is available to candidates aspiring to crack the IIT JEE exam. These include coaching institutes, study materials, mock tests, online tutorials, and reference books authored by subject matter experts. Many candidates also opt for self-study and online learning platforms to supplement their preparation efforts.
  8. Career Opportunities: Clearing the IIT JEE exam opens doors to diverse career opportunities in the field of engineering, technology, research, and academia. Graduates from the IITs and other premier engineering institutions are highly sought after by top-tier companies, both in India and abroad, for employment opportunities across various sectors.

Benefits of IIT JEE Exam Preparation:
